Pawleys Island Is A Tourist Town

Pawleys Island is located approximately 20 miles from Myrtle Beach, S.C. and 75 miles from Charleston S.C.

With its rich southern history and laid-back, old-time charm, visitors can take a step back to a time when barefoot boys caught frogs at the creek, and families spent their evenings on the porch after dinner.

Carrying on with the traditions of family, this island continues to encourage families to vacation there.

The highest speed limit in town is 25 mph, to help ensure the safety of the children vacationing there.

There is an unending list of things for families to see and do.

You can take your family crabbing in the near by rivers and fishing in the salt water marsh. There are tours of museums, including the museum for rice plantations. There are two boat launches for kayaking and canoeing. During low tide, kayaking through the salt water marsh is a favorite pastime.

There are activities and festivals lined up all summer long, as well as, a theatre with a full summer schedule.

The Island also has beautiful golf courses within reasonable driving distance.

For dinner, there is any number of family oriented seafood restaurants.

And at night there are ghost stories to be shared. This is a a beautiful tourist town.

It has managed to hang on to its old style simple southern charm, all the while, sharing it with those that visit there.

Summers on the rivers of South Carolina were harsh and very dangerous in the 1700s.

The rice plantation owners would pack up their family and all of their possessions and move them here to Pawleys Island.

Today, visitors can get a peek into the summer lives of these families in the historical district. 12 homes from that era have been preserved and are open to the public.

Its summers average a high of around 90° with very little rain fall.

The result is beautiful sunny weather that is perfect for a day at the beach.

There are properties that are available for vacation rentals.

In keeping with the leisurely summer’s day feel, Pawleys Island is known world wide for its hammock production. These carefully hand-made hammocks are perfect for lounging on the beautiful white sandy beaches. Not long ago I saw one of these beautiful hammocks on "The Price Is Right."
