The town of Surfside Beach, SC is located right on the Atlantic coast.

With two miles of beach, it is a popular destination for tourists.

The town provides many excellent services by way of restaurants, recreation, safety, and many local attractions. The Myrtle Beach area is often referred to as the Grand Strand.

Surfside Beach is right in the center of that. They proudly call themselves “a family beach.”

In addition to having one of the most beautiful public gardens in the southeast, Brookgreen Gardens also offer walking trails, wildlife exhibits, as well as historical and cultural exhibits.

The Wild Water & Wheels waterpark has more than 33 water rides, a racetrack for all ages, and mini-golf.

Surfside has restaurants that will satisfy any palate—buffets, seafood, fast food, bakeries, dessert shoppes, coffee houses, lounges, pizza places, Mexican food, steakhouses, delis, bars, diners, cafes, and pancake houses.

There are also a variety of places to stay. Hotels, resorts, condominiums, and beach rentals all provide excellent accommodations. Surfside Beach started out known as “the Ark Plantation” and was the home of John M. Tillman.

The first known record of Tillman living there was in 1820. The plantation spanned approximately 3,194 acres.

His actual home stood until the mid-twentieth century. His main crop was sweet potatoes for which he employed around 60 slaves.

He had no wife or children, so upon his death his land was deeded to various other family members.

The plantation then became known as Roach’s Beach with several available cottages.

Today Surf Side Beach remains a safe, family-oriented place that thousands love to visit each year.
